So you are looking in your mirror one day and you notice something new on - or specifically, under - your face: the dreaded double chin. What causes it? And more importantly, how can you get rid of your double chin?
Where Did That Thing Come From Anyways?
Your double chin is the result of excess fat and/or fluids building up underneath your jaw and around your neck. This can be the result of a lymphatic problem causing excessive fluid buildup, excess weight gain, poorly toned jaw muscles, or just natural slackening of your facial muscles and skin as a part of the aging process. Regardless of where it came from, there are several things you can do to get rid of your double chin for good.
Getting Rid of Your Double Chin
There are several easy exercises that you can do to help get that Siamese twin of a chin back into hiding where it belongs:
- The first and easiest is to smile a lot. Smiling works muscles all over you face, including the ones underneath your jaw. This leads to better-toned muscles and helps get rid of your double chin. Plus smiling stimulates your limbic system, leading to a feeling of well being and elevating your mood.
- You can also try massage along and underneath the jawline. This can help if your double chin is caused by excess fluid retention. Massage helps stimulate circulation, which helps carry away the excess fluids and gets rid of your double chin.
- Here’s one along the same lines as the first suggestion: chewing gum can help exercise the muscles in your face and jaw, helping get rid of your double chin. Just be sure to chew sugarless gum; you don’t want to get rid of your double chin only to add cavities.

Surgery should always be considered as a last resort after all other methods have failed. It is expensive - often in the region of $2500 – and is usually not covered under insurance. As with any surgery, there can be sometimes severe complications.
As you can see, there are many ways you can work on getting rid of your double chin. By far the way with the highest rate of success in getting rid of a double chin is to go on a diet and get regular exercise. Some people whose double chins are not severe or are caused by fluid retention will, of course, need less effort or different treatment to get rid of them. No matter what, your double chin will not go away on its own. But if you put forth the effort, you will be rid of it before you know it.
